The Bigger Picture

Theme / Wise Living

It is easy to look at one part of our finances and assume we are doing well. Maybe you’re debt-free and feel like you’re in a great position, but lacking in other areas of your financial well-being.

You save well, but aren’t investing.

You budget well, but aren’t saving.

You invest regularly, but have credit card debt.

We see it all the time, people who are being strong stewards in one area of their finances, but aren’t thriving in the entire picture. There are small areas of lack, that can turn to larger problems down the line.

The Bible gives precedence for being good stewards in every aspect of our lives, and the importance of pursuing a sin-free life in every aspect.

“For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.” — James 2:10 (ESV)

Just as it’s critical to keep the whole law, it’s critical to keep good financial discipline in every part of our financial picture. Not that one small mistake ruins an otherwise good plan, although it certainly can have a negative impact; rather, it reminds us to look at the whole picture.

A holistic financial plan considers saving, investing, spending, debt, insurance, taxes, giving, and ultimately how all of these pieces work together towards a greater goal. A host of small decisions in the right direction, helping steer the entire ship forward. Sometimes the best financial decision isn't doing more in the area where we're already strong. It is addressing the area we've been neglecting.
