My Favorite Teacher

Confession is good for the soul.  I was a math major in college, but I failed my first math class.  Ironically though, the professor of that class became my favorite college teacher.  Why is that?  The answer lies in sand dunes and ghost mining towns.  On select weekends, he would take interested math majors on a Saturday adventure.  Those adventures spoke volumes to me.  He cared about me beyond my math skills – he cared about me as a person.

I often ponder the impact he made on my life and wonder if I’m making the same impact on others.  For example, I’m currently teaching a course virtually to graduate students at a Bible college in the south Pacific.  Due to the time difference, I teach in the evenings here which translates into the following morning there.  Even though the course is virtual, do the students sense my interest in them beyond their ability in class?  I hope so.

At Christian Wealth Management, our goal is to care holistically about those we serve.  We want to make sure our clients invest wisely (according to their goals, timeframes, risk-tolerances, and values), but we want to be more than that.  We want to come alongside them when they encounter the twists and turns of life – to serve as a listening ear and an encouraging voice.

My math professor went to be with the Lord a few years ago, but I had the opportunity to share with him the impact he made on my life.  May each of us relate to people in ways that make a lasting impact, seeking to live out Romans 12:10, “Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.”
