What’s Important?
George Vaillant seems to believe living a healthy life is important. In his book Aging Well, George concludes these six factors can predict healthy aging:
— Regular Exercise
— Drinking Alcohol and Smoking in Moderation
— Maintaining a Healthy Weight
— Stability in Marriage
— Developing Mature Coping Mechanisms for Life’s Fluctuations
I think most of us likely agree living a healthy life is important and the above factors do contribute to a healthier life — especially, developing mature coping mechanisms. I mean, wow! What’s the secret to that? A freshly baked cinnamon roll provides my downcast soul great momentary comfort.
In the sermon on the mount, Jesus exposes backwards thinking of what’s important by saying in Luke 6:20-26:
Woe to you who are..
— rich, for you have already received your comfort
— well fed now, for you will go hungry
— laugh now, for you will mourn and weep
— spoken well of, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets
And, blessed are you who are…
— poor, for yours is the kingdom of God
— hungry, for you will be satisfied
— weep, for you will laugh
— hated, excluded, insulted, and rejected as evil, because of the Son of Man
I wish I could answer in a blog what is important in life. However, Jesus does seems to shed some light on this eternal question when He declined the food His disciples urged Him to eat:
I have food to eat you know nothing about. My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work. (John 4:32;34)
May we continue to hunger for intimacy with God and set aside our agenda to enjoy His Will.
