The Untold Divorce

Less than 9% of born again christians tithe, according to an article by the Christian Post.

This statistic is startling.  As followers of Christ, we believe “the earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it (Psalm 24:1a).”  We live in the wealthiest nation in the world; and yet, many Americans have disconnected their faith from their finances.  Jesus revealed in His historic sermon on the mount a profound truth — where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matthew 6:21).  Our financial decisions present an incredible opportunity for our hearts to entwine with God’s.

At a young age, I learned two things — I’m a sinner who needs a Savior and I’m a spender who needs cash.  I was 4 years old when my dad led me to Christ in the car in the parking lot of our church.  I was 8 years old when my mom helped me bake brownies and drove me to our neighborhood Safeway to sell them to unsuspecting shoppers returning to their cars who either couldn’t resist my cuteness or dark chocolate.  Faith and finances peaked my interest well before puberty.

Various studies suggest we make over 30,000 decisions a day.  I wonder how many of those decisions are connected to our finances.  After college (in 2013), I began working at Christian Wealth Management where we help others explore how our faith in Jesus Christ influences our financial decisions.  Since then, I’ve continued to be encouraged by the opportunity we have to submit our financial desires to the Lordship of Christ to advance His Kingdom, and, in turn, we receive a greater gift — financial peace (or, as the Hebrew reads, Shalom).

Let us strive to keep connected what’s so easy to disconnect — faith and finances.  May our wealth bring glory to You, Lord.

While there are only a handful of things we can do with money (give, save, and spend), our core belief is even simpler — God Owns it all

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

1 Corinthians 10:31
