The Awe of Thunderstorms

Watching a thunderstorm approach on the horizon invokes a sense of awe.  The lightning and thunder signal coming rain – a downpour that will refresh both people and nature.  Whereas the day may be stifling hot, the rain brings refreshing coolness.  Anxiety about the heat is released as the rain begins to fall. Worrying about the heat’s effect on our gardens, grass, plants, and dogs, fades away and is replaced with a new perspective on the day.

The thunderstorm contains a lesson for us about investing.   We can fall into the trap of worrying incessantly about the economy and our investments.  Will the stock market go up or down?  Will the dollar strengthen or weaken?  Will inflation rise or fall?  Will taxes increase or decrease?  Eventually, anxiety about our investments can grow to the point where we need a thunderstorm with a refreshing rain!

Biblically Responsible Investing can bring the change of perspective we need.  It can help us focus on investing to make a positive impact in the world, rather than on the impact in our wallets.  Are lives improved through our investments?  Are families made whole?  Are people healed?  Are lives transformed?  The refreshing rain of Biblically Responsible Investing begins with the right attitude.  The right attitude towards investing is a matter of the heart.  Psalm 62:10 contains a warning: “if riches increase, set not your heart on them.”  While Colossians 3:1 lays out a remedy: “set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.”  But do our investments reflect our heart for God?  Or have our investments captured our hearts?  Let’s do a heart check and incorporate a healthy sense of awe in our investments and enjoy the refreshing rain!
