Parenting and Investing

Parenting two young children is a constant practice of long-term perspective.
Tantrum, the sleepless night, the endless repetition of teaching the same lesson over and over. It’s overwhelming at times, but one piece of advice I got that has stuck with me with parenting, “make the hard parenting choices now, so your kids make the right choices later.”
Discipline and intention can be a challenge in the moment, but it’s laying a foundation of small building blocks to a better long-term future.
Investing can work in a similar way.
Take retirement savings for example – it’s typically not prudent to hold off investing until you’re wealthy enough, just to play catch up at the last moment. Instead, most prudent investors will steadily contribute to their retirement accounts over time. Trusting that the temporary sacrifice now will yield returns in the long run.
Both parenting and investing require patience because the most meaningful results often take years to see.
They also require consistency. Reading one book won't make your child a lifelong learner. Making one investment won't build lasting wealth. The results come from faithfully making the right choice over and over again, even when progress seems invisible.
Perhaps most importantly, both require trust. As parents, we trust that the small lessons, conversations, and moments of guidance will bear fruit over time. As investors, we trust that disciplined saving and investing will compound into something meaningful in the future.
In both cases, there are no shortcuts.
If you’re a parent you know – quick fixes never lead to desirable outcomes in the long run, and there’s rarely a “get rich quick” scheme when it comes to investing. Growth takes time. Whether you're raising children or building wealth, the temptation is often to focus on what you can see today. The reward comes from remaining faithful to a process that may not reveal its full results for years.
Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is simply stay the course.
“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” - Galatians 6:9 (ESV)
