My Allergic Reaction

I was in my birthday suit, and it felt good.  The cool evening air on my body helped bring relief to my hot itching skin, making life tolerable again.  I was nine years old as I walked with my Dad around our large front-yard in the dark, making sure to stay away from our porch light and the streetlight.  My allergic reaction to bee stings had made me uncomfortable, and my Dad suggested that a night-time clothes-less walk would bring relief.  And, as always, my Dad’s wisdom proved correct.

Although it was a revealing walk, it was the first step towards feeling better.  Likewise, taking a revealing look at our investment portfolios can be a first step towards investing that makes us feel better.  Scripture teaches that “Good people stay away from evil. By watching what they do, they protect their lives” (Proverbs 16:17).  None of us should be invested in companies whose products or activities make us uncomfortable.

Unfortunately, most of us – especially if we are invested in an S&P 500 index fund – are invested in companies that are making money off of things that do not match our values: lust-causing pornography, abortion-causing abortifacients, alcoholism-causing alcohol, cancer-causing tobacco, and the list goes on.  The good news is that screening software exists that can shed light on the revenue sources and philanthropic initiatives of companies in your investment portfolios.

I remember that I was reluctant to take my Dad at his word and walk in the dark in my birthday suit, but he walked with me, guiding me until I felt better.  Don’t remain in the dark about your investments, let us walk with you.  We can screen your portfolio and help you navigate to a brighter future.
