I Missed My Flight

Everyone in the airport security line waited in suspense.

It was early Sunday morning around 6am.  The security line in the Miami airport was longer than expected.  With countless families worrying about missing their flight, one TSA agent took it upon himself to lighten the mood using playful banter.  After a few jokes, it began to work.  The mood lightened as chuckles began to break out.

Life has challenges.  We often measure success as our ability to avoid opposition.  During one of his many imprisonments for sharing the gospel, the apostle Paul wrote a letter of encouragement to his friends in Philippi, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things (Philippians 4:8).”

The reality is life is rough — there’s turbulence.  The stock market is no different.  With current socioeconomic and political unrest, the unpredictability of life is often reflected momentarily in the value of the market.  

What should we do with this uncertainty? 

Focus on the value our investments are creating in the world.  For example, a company who produces non-invasive molecular screening for colorectal cancer while prioritizing their customers welfare.  This is a worthwhile investment regardless of the financial return it brings us.

Though market prices are dynamic, it does not determine the value a company presents to humanity.  Biblically Responsible Investing seeks a return through companies who are promoting human flourishing.

Though I missed my flight that day, it created an opportunity for me to finally visit the Mall of America.  The unpredictability of life makes it enjoyable.  It’s an adventure we are on with God building His kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.

Let us be a people who are overwhelmingly known for dwelling on the good and keeping our eyes on the prize, who is Jesus.
