Changing Lanes
Her name was Betsy.
Betsy — my first car — was special. She was a black 2002 Hyundai Accent. Though some may have referred to her as a bucket of bolts, her speaker system had no problem overpowering the abnormal road noise she made. Her manual transmission mixed with the blasting rock music (like Taking Back Sunday, Switchfoot, and Relient K) convinced me I was in a vehicle built for the video game Need for Speed. Though my imagination did wonders to the car my sister pouted as the “anti-people car,” it did indeed have its quirks. The most memorable was its ability to make a right lane change quickly by simply letting go of the steering wheel. Betsy seemed to constantly need an alignment.
Betsy has something in common with people. Through the normal wear and tear of life, we can lose focus of what’s important and be heading the wrong direction. In his book Money, Possessions, and Eternity, Randy Alcorn address misplaced destinations he believes Christians often head toward:
insurance over assurance
securities over security
trusts over trust
principal over principles
real estate over our real estate
net-worth over self-worth
In our pursuit of financial freedom, our challenge remains to stay focused on whose Kingdom we are building. When Betsy started to lose her way, all she needed was some tender love and care from a trained professional who knew how she was designed. When we start drifting, a moment present with our Father brings things into alignment.
