7 Types of Goals

I love new things!

A new song to jam to while I work out.  A new fill to learn on the drums.  A new way to brew a cup of joe — shout out to pour over.   A new morning after a full day.  New things are great and, if the new activity is enjoyed, apparently our brain gets a dopamine dump.  Who doesn’t like a good ole’ natural high?  It’s no wonder the turn of a New Year inspires many to decide to make a positive change or two.

Though we start the new year with hope of an improved life, less than 10% of us see our goals to the finish line.  Ouch… I’m guilty.  So, is making new years resolutions a waste of time?  Or, is there another way?  Dave Ramsey thinks so.  In fact, the Christian financial guru encourages New Years goals to be imagined in these seven areas.

  1. Spiritual

  2. Fitness

  3. Education

  4. Family

  5. Career

  6. Social

  7. Financial

Great ideas, right?!  But, why seven?  

In the words of Doug Hanson, “seven is a good biblical number.”  Genesis 2:2a states, By the seventh day, God had finished the work he had been doing.”  The book of Joshua tells us the Israelites marched around the city of Jericho for seven days.  On the seventh day, they marched around the city seven times and, on the seventh and final time, seven priests sounded their seven trumpets and Joshua instructed the army (more than seven people… dang it!) to, “Shout! For the LORD has given you the city!”  Those are just a few examples that illustrate the historical, Biblical use of Seven. 

In previous years, I’ve set goals that may have been too ambitious or, even, misdirected.  To start 2024, I am following Dave Ramsey’s advice on how to focus the direction of my goals.  Assuming my historical performance will be a good indicator of future results, my prayer this time around…

Lord, please remind me of what’s meaningful in this life and direct my attention toward those things.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
