What Olympians Are Saying
Like many of you, I spent time watching the Olympics. When athletes were interviewed, I heard them emphasizing how inspired they were to compete for their countries. And, I was right there with them, motivated to cheer for American athletes as they ran, swam, jumped and threw. But there was an article published by Christianity Today that redirected my attention.
The article was titled “The Top Christian Highlights of the Paris Olympics” and it focused on Christian athletes using the Olympics as an opportunity to express their faith. As I was reading the article, I noticed a common theme from the athletes.
A swimmer from Australia said she is “very excited to swim for the glory of God and to represent her country while doing so.” A British diver emphasized “I give glory to God” and described her faith as a “steadying force,” saying that she begins each day with prayer and ends it with Bible study. A sprinter from St. Lucia said in a post-race interview, “I told God that whenever I win, I will give him the glory always, so I thank God for bringing me through, for giving me the strength to come so far.” An Australian high jumper praises God no matter what: “Praise be to God my Rock! He is my strength and song!”
These athletes were not only competing for their countries, but also to glorify God. In doing so, they were echoing the attitude of 1 Corinthians 10:31 “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” We may not be as athletically gifted as Olympian athletes, but we can certainly follow their lead in glorifying God in our lives.
