What Are You Building This Year?
You get what you go for.
Since I was a young boy, I’ve had expensive taste in toys. Whether it was a go-kart, mini trail, or an electronic drum-set, it seemed each new hobby required big upfront costs. In order to stay motivated while I was diligently saving, I would print out a picture of the current item which captured my attention and place it next to my pillow. In anticipation of the day I could purchase my prize, I would look at its picture each night while I laid down to sleep.
As we start this new year, many of us will establish new goals. Increase exercise, healthier eating, de-clutter, and more money saved are at the top of new year resolutions. Though they may be great goals, many find themselves disappointed they haven’t accomplished their previous goals.
Matthew 6:33 states, “But seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Have you ever made a New Years resolution to seek God fervently? How often have we judged our year’s success, not based on how much money we saved or weight we lost, but on how much of God’s kingdom we built?
Building the Kingdom of God and building physical and financial health are not mutually exclusive. But here, I believe, lies the conflict: we may be using these goals to secretly or subconsciously build our kingdom.
I noticed when I’m building my kingdom, motivation works like an old rundown car needing multiple gallons per mile and falling apart at every obstacle hit. Motivation in building the Kingdom of God works like the Tesla truck — Indestructible and energy effective.
Motivation is tricky, and only you answer who’s kingdom you’re building. If we get what we go for, let’s set our eyes on His Kingdom and His righteous remembering our prize isn’t diminished to merely physical or financial health - our prize is Jesus.
