The Football Team Was Watching

Theme / Wisdom for Life

Read Time / 2 Minutes

It happened quickly and unexpectedly.  I was running laps around a cinder track at a local high school one weekday afternoon while the football team was practicing.  The team was favored to win the state championship that year, which generated a lot of interest from the community.  I was training to run a 10K race in a few weeks, so I thought I’d do a track workout while checking out the practice.  At least it seemed like a good idea.

Then it happened.  I was on the ground.  I had looked over my left shoulder momentarily to see the activity on the field and tripped.  My pride was hurt more than anything as I assumed that all eyes of the football team were on me.  So, I struggled to my feet, dusted myself off, and slowly jogged down the track.

In Proverbs 4:25-26 we read, “Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.  Ponder the path of your feet, then all your ways will be sure.”  The proverb teaches us a life lesson.  Don’t take your eyes off your goals!  We may have many goals in life, some physical, while others could be spiritual, relational, or financial.  But reaching a goal takes focus!

Is there a health goal you’d like to accomplish?  Take that first step.  Is there a spiritual practice you’d like to incorporate into your life?  Begin today.  Is there a relationship you’d like to nurture?   Reach out.  Is there a money milestone you’d like to get to?  Be persistent.  “A desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul” (Proverbs 13:19).

Pursue your goals!  Run towards them with purpose and passion.  And, above all else, don’t look over your left shoulder!
