A Child’s Laugh

Read Time - 2 Minutes

It was an invigorating indoor activity during cold winter days that my three young children looked forward to with anticipation.  I would turn the music up loud, move the coffee table to the center of the room, and race with my kids around the living room.  The song “The Trumpet of Jesus,” by the Imperials, provided the upbeat tempo needed and my children would squeal with excitement as the laps continued.  Eventually we would all fall to the floor laughing and trying to catch our breath.

But the activity was more than just physical exercise.  My children again and again heard the song’s chorus, “I listen to the trumpet of Jesus, while the world hears a different sound.”  It was one of our ways as parents to instill priorities in our children, even if they did not realize it at their age.

Our children are adults now, navigating their way in the world.   No matter our age, we all should have priorities in our lives.   Our priorities should extend to all areas of our lives, including our health, our families, our finances, and our futures.  There will be a trumpet blow in the future that will be a game changer for this world:  “For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first” (1 Thessalonians 4:16).

While we anticipate the blowing of that future trumpet, we should ask ourselves what trumpets we are listening to today.  The trumpet of Jesus should play a role even in our finances.  Let us make sure that what we invest in echoes the trumpet of Jesus.  The sound of our investments may be different than the world’s, but it will play well when that final trumpet sounds!
