Strength in Community

Theme / Wise Living

Fall is my favorite time of year. Football is back. The weather is ideal. The colors of the changing leaves and the first snowfall of the year. It’s all beautiful to me. It truly is the best time of year, especially in Boise. A common theme through Fall is the emergence of community. School’s back in session and kids get to see their friends again. During Thanksgiving, we get to connect with loved ones and celebrate a feast together. Even at a football game, tens of thousands of people coming together united over cheering for their favorite team. Community is essential to the Christian lifestyle. We weren’t meant to do life alone and that includes our financial journey.

Many of you are familiar with Ecclesiastes 4:11-12:

Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

It’s a powerful verse often discussed in the context of marriage, and building a covenant with God; however, the context of the verse isn’t specifically referring to marriage. Look back to verses 9 and 10 and we get a better view of the full context:

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.  For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!

King Solomon isn’t just writing about marriage, he’s writing about the value in community in labor and in life. I believe we need to apply this verse to more facets of our lives, particularly finances. If you’re a single person, find accountability partners to help keep you on track for your financial goals. If you’re married, find other couples to connect and talk household finance with. Discussing personal finance has become taboo in our culture at the detriment of good financial stewardship for many people.

This Fall, I encourage you, connect over more than just football and food. Find time to discuss your financial health with someone you trust and work together to build a better financial future.
