Seven Topics to Re-Imagine Your 2025 Goals

I LOVE new things.

A new song to jam to while I work out.  A new fill to learn on the drums.  A new type of coffee to brew at home — shout out to anaerobic and co-ferments.   A new morning after a full day.  New things are great and, if the new activity is enjoyed, apparently our brain gets a dopamine dump.  Who doesn’t like a good ole’ natural high?  It’s no wonder the turn of a New Year inspires many to decide to make a positive change or two.

Though we start the new year with hope of an improved life, less than 10% of us see our goals to the finish line.  Ouch… I’m guilty.  So, is making new year’s resolutions a waste of time?  Or, is there another way?  Dave Ramsey thinks so.  In fact, the Christian financial guru encourages New Years goals to be re-imagined in seven categories.

  1. Spiritual

  2. Fitness

  3. Education

  4. Family

  5. Career

  6. Social

  7. Financial

Great ideas, right?!  But, why seven?

In the words of Doug Hanson, “seven is a good biblical number.”  Genesis 2:2a states, By the seventh day, God had finished the work he had been doing.”  The book of Joshua tells us the Israelites marched around the city of Jericho for seven days.  On the seventh day, they marched around the city seven times and, on the seventh and final time, seven priests sounded their seven trumpets and Joshua instructed the army (more than seven people… dang it!) to, “Shout! For the LORD has given you the city!”  Those are just a few examples that illustrate the historical, Biblical use of seven.

In previous years, I’ve set goals that may have been too ambitious or, even, misdirected.  To start 2025, I am following Dave Ramsey’s advice on how to focus the direction of my goals.  Assuming my historical performance will be a good indicator of future results, here’s my prayer going into 2025…

Lord, remind me of what is eternal, and grant me the boldness to invest my time and money toward those things.

But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
