Laying Square Eggs

Theme / Generosity

My ears perked up when I heard my parents mention his name.  I was five years old and sitting in the back seat on a cross-country road-trip, and since I couldn’t read yet I was keeping myself busy by looking at pictures in Donald Duck story books.  My favorite was “Lost in the Andes.”  It was an adventure story of travel to a far-away land in search of a treasure-of-sorts (mythical chickens who laid square eggs).

My parents were in the front seat discussing relatives who I would meet for the first time and they mentioned the name “Donald.”  When I asked who Donald was, my mother replied that he was my uncle.  Immediately, my young mind determined an amazing truth and I blurted out with astonishment: “Is Donald Duck my uncle?”  I’ll never forget the huge smiles on my parents’ faces when they realized their child’s thought process.  I remember them trying to unconvince me, but it didn’t work.  I was related to the adventurous Donald Duck!

In looking back, I smile at the conclusions I made as a child.  I had the wrong perception, but it made sense to me.  Likewise, we can have the wrong perception about financial advisors, especially when we are looking for an advisor who will provide financial guidance from a biblical perspective.  We may be looking for a “Financial advisor who is a Christian,” but we need to be looking for a “Christian financial advisor.”  A Christian financial advisor takes the step of incorporating their faith into their professional advice.

For example, the Bible teaches us to be “rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share” (1 Timothy 6:18).  A Christian financial advisor will encourage their clients to be more generous, especially as a client’s net worth increases, to “store up for themselves treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:20).  Growing in generosity is a process that includes getting out of debt (Proverbs 22:7), saving and investing to care for family needs (1 Timothy 5:8), and seeking to live out Scripture’s definition of financial contentment (Hebrews 13:5-6).

I am happy to report that Donald Duck’s journey to the mountains of South America was a success!  Similarly, may we all have success in implementing biblical principles into our financial journeys, especially in being generous.
