“I am proud of you son”
My father passed away last week at the age of 86. It was unexpected – yet anticipated. The older we get; death naturally draws closer. But his death has caused me to reflect on his life, something I’m sure I will continue to do the rest of my life. And here is one thing that stands out.
My father often told me that he was proud of me. Sometimes he would mention why he was proud of me, but most of the time he didn’t elaborate. And, in many ways, it was better when he left it undefined. By leaving it unsaid, I then interpreted it as applying to many areas of my life, encouraging me to honor the description in everything I did. It was a blessing, and I will miss hearing “I am proud of you son.”
My father lived this verse: “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing” (1 Thessalonians 5:11). After seeing or talking to my father, I always felt uplifted, ready to tackle the world. That must have been why he encouraged me so; he knew that I, as we all do, need others in our lives to help us be the best person we can be. My father did that for me, and I will always appreciate him for it, but miss him dearly because of it.
My father is in his heavenly home, and I look forward to seeing him again someday and hearing those words “I am proud of you son.”
