Got Milk?

Mr. Millers arms breaking off left the family speechless.

In 1999, Kellogg Co released a controversial commercial promoting the importance of milk.  Maybe, you’ve seen it.  A young brother and sister are sitting down at the kitchen table, eating breakfast, when they are encouraged by their mom to drink a glass of milk.  Disgusted at her request, the siblings complained, “milk was for babies,” and they had proof.  The neighbor, Mr. Miller, didn’t drink milk, and he was strong.  Or so they thought.

“College is essential,” was the message my sisters and I were told growing up.  In my early years, the idea of paying tuition for attending an additional four years of education sounded ludicrous.  But once I realized the long-term financials benefits of higher education, my appetite changed and I became hungry for a degree.

What are you hungry for?

For many it may be a desire to grow our knowledge, increase our finances, build a business, get married, or start a family.  As a teenager, I longed for a girlfriend.  Out of college, I was starving for a paycheck.  We all wake up hungry for something.  We satisfy one craving to be left with the next.

What will satisfy this insatiable desire?

Jesus shares in Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”

Righteousness is the Word and instruction of God (Psalm 119:172).  When we apply God’s instruction in our life at all times, we are called blessed (Psalm 106:3).  If you have served Christ longer than one day, you know the challenge behind doing righteousness at all times.  It’s enormity brings me to my knees and creates an increased demand for the presence of God.

When the brother and sister witnessed the results of a milk deficient diet, their thirst for milk became fervent.  Lord, may our eyes be open to see the areas of our lives where we are God deficient so our hunger will be for righteousness and our thirst quenched.
