A Lonely Independence Baby
“Look! The whole country is celebrating you.” Grandpa whispered to me as fireworks went off in the distant sky.
Being born on independence day had its share of challenges. Though the date was easy to remember, most friends were out of town with their families celebrating this holiday. While my parties main attendees were family members, I was left wishing my friends were present.
In life, perspective is everything. Sometimes, things go our way while many times, they don’t. It’s important to be reminded the value of our life is not determined by the things that go our way, but by the things we’ve invited to go God’s way. When we release our desire for control, it makes room for us to accept the invitation extended by the Lord — to “set our minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth (Colossians 3:2).”
Getting my friends together for my birthday was important to me as a child. My stubborn attitude allowed disappointment to overwhelm the good happening around me.
Being born on the Fourth of July had a history of disappointment, but now it’s a source of joy. I look forward to going to grandpa’s house to spend time with family, watch fireworks, and set my eyes on the things above.
