4x Champion, 1st Finals MVP

“What does it mean for you to finally be a Finals MVP?”

The greatness of Stephen Curry has been challenged since the beginning of his career.  Through each accolade (2x regular season Most Valuable Player, multiple championships, and all-time three point king), critics would find his deficiencies and highlight the things he wasn’t.  He may have been a three-time champion, but he had yet to earn a Finals MVP, and his doubters made sure everyone knew about it.

This makes his response that much more noteworthy - hence this blog.  (Also, I wanted another excuse to write about sports.  Alright, enough of that… back to the story.)

Upon winning his fourth championship and first Finals Most Valuable Player, a reporter eagerly asked Curry, “What does it mean for you to finally be a Finals MVP?”  His immediate response, “Forget that.  WE champs!”

The all-time great basketball player rejected the opportunity to exalt his individual accomplishment and persisted to place the honor on God and others.

Steph is reminding us of an important lesson.  What we accomplish alone is less significant than what we’ve accomplished together.

God recognized it quickly after breathing life into Adam and placing him in the Garden of Eden.  “The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone (Genesis 2:18).’’  Ecclesiastes 4:9a puts it, “Two are better than one.”

Many of us make goals.  These goals are often financial, spiritual, intellectual, or physical.  Learning how to continue to incorporate the prize of healthy relationships into our goals will help us maintain perspective on the things that really matter.

Winning a finals MVP was meaningful for Steph.  However, the way he embraced his father, who stood on the side lines, and his team, as the clock expired to declare the Golden State Warriors four-time champions in 8 years, it was obvious relationships played an instrumental role in what made these accomplishments valuable.

In celebration of Doug and Jan’s 40th wedding anniversary; a tremendous milestone. We are blessed by Doug and his impact in Christian Wealth Management.
